be aware of firmware options, November 28, 2009 By Mr. Bill (Los Altos, CA USA) - See all my reviews I am posting a revised review of the Miele W4840/T9820. The reason is, I want to revise my score upward. (Fair is fair.) I include the original review for reference below.
I stand by my original assessment of these products, EXCEPT, I was very fortunate that my Miele dryer had a recall. (I am not kidding about this). After a few false starts, the Miele repair guy came out with a firmware change for the dryer. I complained to him that the washer was not getting my clothes clean, and I discovered that there are TWO PAGES of firmware options available to be set by a repair technician. These options include "hygiene" and "allergies", each of which increases the amount of water used in the wash.
Turning on these two options, my washing machine now uses enough water to get my clothes clean. What a concept!
I have 2 things I want to accomplish by re-writing this review. First, if you already own a Miele W4840, and if you agree that the clothes aren't... Read more

There IS a reason why this is a TOP rated model from multiple user reivews on epnions, and the big forumn on washing machine in the "laundry" section on gardenweb (search for it) which is the most active forum discussion washing machines.
The 4840 is one of THE most reliable front loading machines. It is built like a tank, vibrates very little, has extremely durable controls, a heater that can allow controls for any user selected wash temperature, etc.
Of the prior two reviews one is bogus and one reflects a rare experience but also gives bad facts (relative availability of miele service).
If you want the straight dope go check the epinions reviews where you see reviewers with histories discuss this model and you will see it has one of the highest ratings and why.

Expensive junk, September 23, 2009 By We purchased our Miele 4840 washer two years ago. We were told by the salesman that we were buying the best there was and that we wouldn't have a problem with this for 20 years or maybe more. We knew it was expensive so we decided to purchase an extended warranty on it but, hoped we would never have to use it. Well here is it two years after we have bought it and it broke down with some type of water system error. We called in the extended warranty and they sent out someone who had no idea how to fix it, nor did they have any other shops who were available to fix it. We decided that even though we paid for the extended warranty it would be better to get someone who was qualified to work on Miele washers. We live in a large metropolitan area and there are only two places qualified to work on Miele appliances. One of them we found out is unreliable so that left one. He has a workload a mile long.
